Reliance Jio Gigafiber's new service, now the Internet will run with a speed of 50Mbps

It’s been quite some time since we have been reporting about Reliance Jio GigaFiber broadband service. In the latest development, the company has introduced a new iteration of the service requiring a security deposit of INR 2,500. The distinguishing factor here is that this new service by Jio GigaFiber demands lesser security deposit than the original broadband service model showcased by the company in the initial phase of launch.

Reliance Jio GigaFiber Intros New 50Mbps Broadband Service
The latest offer by Reliance Jio GigaFiber includes a new service with 50Mbps of speed and a single band router. The router clubbed with the package is reportedly an inferior optical network terminal (ONT) device, but the GigaFiber service provided by Reliance under the new offer is also seemingly identical to the original service started by the telco based on GigaHub Home Gateway.

According to a tweet by GigaFiber user Preshit Deorukhkar, Reliance Jio GigaFiber’s new service comes with a single-band supporting router with internet speeds capped at 50Mbps. Reliance has also included voice services alongside the latest service. Although GigaFiber service by Reliance is yet to launch all across the country, major cities like Mumbai and Chennai are already using it, and the new 50Mbps service is also being offered to them simultaneously. For the new facility, subscribers have to pay a security deposit of INR 2,500 while the original GigaFiber plan required a deposit of INR 4,500.

The difference in Speeds Between Original GigaFiber Service and the New One
The ONT (Optical Network Terminal) device provided by Reliance Jio for the original service was known as the GigaFiber Home Gateway with support for dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) connectivity capable of up to 1Gbps speeds but capped at 100Mbps for the current plans. The new service, on the other hand, has an inferior device with speeds capped at 50Mbps. Although the speed of the new service is half the original plan, Reliance bundles it with free 1,100GB monthly data access. Besides, the early subscribers for the service on DreamDTH forums have revealed that the latest service also includes access to JioTV app.

For now, there is no official announcement by Reliance Jio concerning the co-existence and positioning of the latest service in regards to the original service that was introduced in August 2018. Also, the first subscribers are yet to get voice services by the telco as the launch keeps getting delayed due to unknown reasons. And now with the new service on the horizon that comes with voice services, it would be quite annoying to the original service subscribers. In its defense, Reliance Jio did bundle landline connection to select original service users. It remains to be seen if the company covers all the existing subscribers for the voice service.

Reliance is yet to come out with an official statement concerning the new service or model being offered to the new users. It does look like the company is aiming to target different segments of subscribers by providing different plans with varying speeds and deposit value.
